Instant Downloads are an Instant Hit!

Correction

Finally, the last thing I should mention is an update on last month’s free trick of the month. I bought these downloads right away after reading about them. Jeff, thank for moving to downloads. This is a great way to get info to people and at less cost to you.

As far as the content goes, I can’t wait to start learning and using them.

Thanks for the note Steven. Keep us posted on how it goes when you start performing them. I’ve got a few more projects coming soon. Some of them will be instant downloads. It’s a good working model. Plus it’s a lot easier to manage.

I think it’s fun to think about this:

Imagine 30 years ago telling someone that someday, you would be able to have a product that met the following needs:

* It had infinite inventory
* Yet you don’t have to stock it
* It could be “shipped” to anywhere in the world instantly

To us, today, that’s just an e-book. Think how crazy things’ll be in another 30 years.

As exciting as it is to get something like an e-book delivered to you instantly, being an individual who may be concidered “older” (50 years) I still prefer sitting in an armchair reading a traditional printed book by the light of a lamp instead of a computer screen. I personally never purchase e-books or downloads, for fear of losing them to a computer crash. I just don’t want the burden of always having to back things up that are important to me. There is also something to be said for the fact that you could bring a book anywhere, which is not so easy with a laptop.

Lands10- I use Carbonite it automatically starts backing up all my files and encrypts them as soon as it is on my hard drive. It is definitely worth the cost since I don’t have any discs to burn and it will be easy to put everything back if my system crashes.

I prefer hardcopy books myself, but with current exchange “like” and crazy overseas shipping, I kinda had to resort to ebook versions for certain books (like Amateur Magician’s Handbook).

It’s nice that you can do instant searches with ebooks, and the fact that you don’t have to worry about ‘trying to keep the book open’. But I’m with Lands10 on hardcopies.

  @Mathias – the overseas shipping was one of the reasons I’ve decided to test out downloads. While I do offer free international shipping, often I have customers who end up paying customs fees. It’s a bit of a bummer. It only costs me a few dollars to ship overseas (depending on what the product is), but sometimes it takes forever, and other times the customer gets stuck paying a customs fee.
  
  The other thing is that the price is much better on instant downloads because the production costs are much cheaper (no duplication), so I’m dabbling and experimenting as always. 🙂

@lands10 – While I’m still considered by man a “young buck” (37 years), I do agree with you. I know what you mean about fear of loosing files. Remember, If I lose the files, I’m losing the originals. That’d be a bummer.

I also use Carbonite as Steven Mentioned. It’s great. It’s only like 50 bucks a year, and they back up an unlimited amount of space.

The other thing that you mentioned, portability, I’m with you there too. However, for me, I’m never more than 4 feet from my laptop. Plus I think that soon the Kindle type technology will will get to the point that this won’t even be a concern anymore.

I still always print any ebooks that I purchase. I’ve got a humongous binder full of them.

BTW-sometimes I cheat (shh don’t tell anyone) I print out the real important stuff so I can read it in my easy chair or at my desk.

I tend to make a book or magazine my own by highlighting and making notes on it.

I just stumbled across this site by viewing your free trick on Jay Sankey’s site. I must say that I am quite impressed. Great stuff Jeff.

As a Canadian, I really like the idea of instant downloads. Most magic I purchase is from the US or Europe, and it either takes weeks to arrive, or I have to pay customs fees.

I also just print out the important parts of the big ebooks, and just print out the smaller ebooks and get them spiral bound for next to nothing.

The only thing I don’t like about reading ebooks on my laptop is the slight eye-strain, and the fact that my laptop has a very short battery life. 😛

@Dan – Thank you. I’ve got a few things in the works that are downloads. The whole download thing is still an experiment right now, but so far it’s looking good.

@Mathias – I used to coil bind mine too until I had a pile of coil bound books linking to each other. I decided to go for the HUMONGOUS binder technique instead

Instant Downloads, like instant potatoes, are great because they are…well…instant! But they aren’t quite as good as the real thing (an actual book or actual mashed potatoes). Of course with the money you save on lower costs on the books, you should be able to print out either the whole thing or just those sections of most interest. So don’t say “Down with Downloads!” Just get down with the downloads, man!
